While Wings of Hope is actively looking to adopt horses for our program, we typically adopt directly from rescues who have had time to determine if the horse's temperament is well suited for the youth we work with.
Horses that would be a good candidate for a Wings of Hope adoption are -
Typically, under 20 years old.
Sound at a walk.
Can work with many handlers (50+ volunteers and 50+ children).
While we have a "Wings of Hope way" for consistency in care and riding, the horses work with 50+ individuals weekly and their personality needs to be amenable to not being a "one person" horse.
Not easily startled - some of the youth who attend sessions might not be able to control their movements or sounds, so the horses need to be slow to react in a variety of circumstances to ensure safety.
If you would like to complete a horse adoption form, we've included a link below and our equine team will reach out to you if your horse could potentially be a good fit for the ministry sessions. If applicable they will outline the adoption timeline and visits.
Should you feel, your horse would not be a good fit for Wings of Hope, we've included local organizations we are familiar with that may be able to assist you -
VEWs - we adopted our late horse, Honey from VEWs
PERL - this is who rescued Paxton and our late horse, Moses
White Bird Appaloosa Rescue - our late horse Cody and spunky minis Wendy & Belle first found refugee here
Hope's Legacy Equine Rescue - in Charlottesville, we have not adopted from them but have mutual volunteers.
Virginia Partnership for Horses - we are a partner of this organization, and they can help owners with direct placements.
Please share if your horse goes to a local rescue so we can reach out to them and learn if your horse might be a good fit for Wings of Hope.
We pray your horse finds a soft landing.
